When Rest Doesn’t Feel Like Rest

Overview
You finally have an evening with nothing to do, yet somehow you can’t relax. Your body has stopped, but your mind is still moving. Rest can feel surprisingly difficult when we’ve spent too long measuring our days by how much we accomplish.
Sometimes rest feels less like relief and more like something we need to earn.
You sit down, but your mind immediately starts listing everything you could be doing. You reach for your phone. You check your inbox. You think about tomorrow.
Being physically still doesn’t necessarily mean we feel safe enough to slow down.
When we spend long periods operating under stress, constant activity can become familiar. Slowing down creates space—and that space can initially feel uncomfortable.
Try beginning with smaller moments of rest rather than forcing yourself to completely switch off. Take a slow walk without a destination. Sit with your morning drink before opening your phone. Leave a few minutes between one task and the next.
Rest doesn’t always need to be productive.
Sometimes its purpose is simply to remind you that you’re allowed to exist without constantly doing.
