What Actually Happens in Your First Therapy Session?

Overview
Starting therapy can feel uncertain, especially if you've never experienced it before. Knowing what to expect can make taking that first step feel a little less intimidating.
You don't need to arrive at therapy knowing exactly what to say.
And you don't need a perfectly organized explanation of everything you're experiencing.
A first session is often about getting to know each other.
Your therapist may ask what brought you there, what life has felt like recently, what you'd like support with, and what you hope might change.
But it's also your opportunity to ask questions.
You can talk about what feels comfortable, what doesn't, and what you're looking for from the process.
Therapy isn't about performing vulnerability correctly.
It's a relationship that develops gradually.
The first conversation doesn't need to solve everything.
It simply creates a place to begin.
